" In January I went to the Carpathian mountains and happened to see a unique local feast — Malanka. The feast is always celebrated on the 13th of January and has its roots in pagan times. I remember that day: the sun was shining bright, the sky was peacefully blue, and the snow was dazzling white. The procession of performers dressed in different costumes was going around the village and sang “koliada”, the traditional Slavic Christmas songs. Everybody around was laughing, dancing, and drinking; people looked so joyful, happy, and alive. And so was I.
